There’s something pretty wonderful that happens as we get older.
Somewhere between juggling careers, raising families, navigating relationships, and figuring out what we actually want out of life, we start realizing something importantโฆ
We don’t have to do it all anymore.
And better yet? We don’t have to want to do it all!
Maybe you’ve stopped worrying quite so much about what other people think. Maybe you’ve learned that saying “no” is a complete sentence. Or perhaps you’ve finally realized that your happiness deserves a spot on the priority list, too.
Whatever stage of life you’re in, one thing is certain:
Getting older doesn’t have to mean slowing down. Sometimes, it means finally letting go of the things that were holding us back!
So, in honor of all the fabulous women embracing their next chapter, here are 10 things we’re giving ourselves full permission to stop doing.
And don’t be surprised if a few of these sound very familiar! ๐
1. Saying “Yes” When We Really Mean “No”
Oh, this is a big one!
How many times have you agreed to something simply because you didn’t want to disappoint someone?
The extra volunteer shift. The dinner invitation you didn’t really want to attend. The favor that somehow turned into an entire weekend project.
We’ve all been there.
But here’s a little reminder: You can be a kind, thoughtful person and still have boundaries.
You don’t need a complicated excuse or a 10-minute explanation.
Sometimes, a simple “Thank you for thinking of me, but I won’t be able to” is more than enough.
Try This: The next time someone asks for something, give yourself permission to say, “Let me check and get back to you.”
A little breathing room can make all the difference.
2. Apologizing for Absolutely Everything
“Sorry to bother you!”
“Sorry, can I ask a question?”
“Sorry, I just have one little thingโฆ”
Sound familiar?
Somewhere along the way, many of us picked up the habit of apologizing for simply taking up space.
But asking a question, sharing an opinion, or needing a little help isn’t something you have to apologize for.
Try This: Swap “Sorry I’m late replying” for “Thanks for your patience.”
Or replace “Sorry to bother you” with “Do you have a moment?”
It’s a tiny change in language, but it can help you communicate with a little more confidence.
And of course, when a genuine apology is needed, give one wholeheartedly!
3. Trying to Keep Everyone Happy
Here’s a truth that can take decades to fully appreciateโฆ
You can be the sweetest peach in the world, and someone still won’t like peaches.
And that’s okay!
Not everyone is going to agree with your decisions, understand your priorities, or love the way you live your life.
Maybe you want to travel more.
Maybe you love staying home.
Maybe you’re changing careers at 58 or taking up painting at 67.
Your choices don’t need to make sense to everyone else.
Little Reminder: You are allowed to build a life that feels right for you, even if it looks different from what others expected.
4. Comparing Ourselves to Other Women
Let’s be honest.
It’s easy to look at someone else’s life and wonder whether we’re somehow falling behind.
She’s retired already.
She looks amazing.
Her house is always spotless.
She seems to have everything figured out.
But here’s what we often forget: We’re usually comparing our everyday reality to someone else’s highlight reel.
And nobody’s life is quite as perfect as it looks from the outside.
Try This: The next time you catch yourself comparing, ask, “What am I proud of in my own life right now?”
Maybe it’s your resilience. Your friendships. Your career. Your family. Or simply the fact that you’ve made it through some really difficult seasons.
Those things count, too.
5. Wearing Things Just Because They’re “Age-Appropriate”
Who decided women over 50 can’t wear bright colors, trendy jeans, sleeveless tops, or a fabulous pair of boots?
We’d like a word!
Style is personal, and your birthday doesn’t suddenly come with a new set of fashion rules.
If you love a bold red lipstick, wear it.
If you feel amazing in a colorful dress, rock it.
And if your favorite outfit is a comfy pair of leggings and an oversized sweater?
That’s wonderful, too!
The New Fashion Rule: Wear what makes you feel comfortable, confident, and completely yourself.
Because great style doesn’t have an expiration date!
6. Feeling Guilty About Taking Time for Ourselves
For years, many women have been the ones making sure everyone else is okay.
The kids. The parents. The partner. The coworkers. The neighbors.
And somewhere in the middle of all that, our own needs can end up at the bottom of the list.
But taking care of yourself isn’t selfish.
It’s necessary.
And it doesn’t have to mean booking an expensive spa weekend.
Sometimes, self-care looks like:
- Taking a quiet walk.
- Reading a book without interruptions.
- Enjoying lunch with a friend.
- Turning off your phone for an hour.
- Getting enough rest.
- Saying, “I’m taking the afternoon for myself.”
Try This: Schedule one small thing each week that’s purely for your own enjoyment.
Not because it’s productive.
Not because someone else needs it.
Just because it makes you happy.
7. Waiting for the “Perfect Time” to Try Something New
Have you ever caught yourself sayingโฆ
“I’ll do that when I retire.”
“I’ll start when things settle down.”
“Maybe next year.”
Well, here’s a thought:
What if the perfect time is simply the time you decide to begin?
You don’t have to be young to learn a new skill, make a new friend, start a business, or discover a hobby you absolutely love.
Want to take dance lessons at 62?
Go for it!
Thinking about learning Italian at 55?
Why not?
Always dreamed of writing a book?
There’s no rule saying you should have started 20 years ago.
Little Challenge: Think of one thing you’ve been putting off because you feel like it’s too late.
Now ask yourself, “What’s one tiny step I could take toward it this month?”
You might surprise yourself.
8. Keeping Things That No Longer Make Us Happy
We’re not just talking about that sweater hanging in the closet with the tags still attached.
Although, yes, that can go too!
We’re talking about the habits, commitments, expectations, and routines that no longer fit the life we want.
Maybe it’s a social obligation that leaves you drained.
Maybe it’s an old goal you’ve outgrown.
Or maybe it’s the pressure to maintain a picture-perfect home when you’d rather spend your Saturday doing something fun.
Try This: Pick one small area of your life and ask, “Am I keeping this because it matters to me, or simply because I’ve always done it?”
Sometimes, letting go creates room for something much better.
9. Worrying About Looking Younger
Can we talk about this one for a moment?
There’s absolutely nothing wrong with enjoying skincare, coloring your hair, wearing makeup, or treating yourself to a beauty appointment.
If it makes you happy, wonderful!
But the idea that women should spend their lives trying to look younger?
We’re ready to retire that expectation.
Your laugh lines tell a story.
Your silver hair can be gorgeous.
And the confidence you’ve gained through years of experience is something no beauty product can put in a bottle.
A Better Beauty Goal: Instead of asking, “How can I look younger?” try asking, “What helps me feel beautiful and comfortable in my own skin?”
Because looking your best and looking younger aren’t the same thing.
10. Believing Our Best Years Are Behind Us
We saved this one for last because it might just be the most important.
Somewhere along the way, society started treating aging like something women should dread.
But why?
Your 40s can bring a whole new sense of confidence.
Your 50s might be the decade you finally start putting yourself first.
Your 60s could bring new adventures, friendships, and freedom.
And your 70s?
Who’s to say they can’t be filled with some of your happiest memories yet?
Of course, life isn’t always easy. Every decade comes with its own challenges, changes, and unexpected turns.
But there’s no reason to believe that all the wonderful things are already behind you.
Your life is still happening.
There are still places to see.
People to meet.
Things to learn.
And moments that might become your favorite memories.
Don’t count yourself out of the fun just yet!
A Little Reminder for Your Next Chapter ๐
Here’s what we hope you’ll remember today:
You don’t have to earn the right to rest.
You don’t have to explain every decision.
You don’t have to dress a certain way, look a certain age, or follow someone else’s timeline.
And you certainly don’t have to keep doing things simply because you’ve always done them.
You are allowed to change your mind, change your priorities, and create a life that feels good to YOU.
Maybe that means more adventure.
Maybe it means more peace.
Maybe it’s a little bit of both.
Whatever it looks like, this chapter belongs to you.
So here’s to saying yes to the things that light us up, no to the things that drain us, and giving ourselves permission to enjoy the wonderful women we’ve become.
Because getting older isn’t about becoming less of yourself. It’s about having the freedom to become even more YOU! ๐
